“Everything Biotic”
The definition of biotic given by Merriam-Webster is something of, relating to, or caused by living organisms. The term generally refers to the study of biological ecosystems. An ecosystem is made up of a biotic community with a diversity consisting of all of the naturally occurring organisms within the system. The biota within the human body that have increasingly been shown to impact virtually all aspects of our healthy wellness are the bacteria and other microbes that live on and in our bodies. It is now known that maintaining the diversity and composition of these microbial communities is critical to digestive health and can contribute to weight control, help regulate the immune system, impact mood and mental health, and protect us from infections.
There are over 100 trillion bacteria on and in our bodies. In fact, this is ten times the number of human cells we have. Studies show that diet dramatically alters the composition of these bacteria. Most critical is maintaining a wide diversity of gut bacteria. Diets high in fiber and with plenty of fresh vegetables result in the highest diversity while a diet high in sugar and processed foods reduces diversity. Reduced diversity has been linked with the risk of the onset of chronic diseases such as diabetes.
MyHealthyWellness.com specializes in offering a wide array of biotic foods and supplements. Some foods are pre-biotic which means the food acts as food for the bacteria and microbes in the gut to promote the growth of a diverse population of microbes. Supplements known as probiotics are actual bacteria that are ingested to help maintain good bacteria in the gut. When taken together pre-biotics provide the food and the pro-biotic the bacteria. This is known as a synbiotic diet since the combination both promotes and maintains the healthy microbiome.
Other foods can also impact healthy wellness by enriching gut diversity that is biotic but less obvious than fiber supplements. Surprisingly, dark chocolate with greater than 70% cocoa is rich in polyphenols has been reported to encourage microbiota diversity. Other healthy snacks include nuts that are low carbohydrate alternatives, and cultured or fermented food or beverages such as Kombucha or Kefir. Yogurt is one of the very best biotic foods one can eat. It is now clear that what we eat has a profound effect on how we feel and on our overall wellness and health. Some individuals have special dietary requirements such as Gluten-free, Vegan, high protein, weight loss, or lactose alternatives.
